Carlos Gracie Sr Commandments, 1

Carlos Gracie Sr Commandments:

1 – Be so strong that nothing can disturb the peace of your mind.

Carlos Gracie Sr was the original founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I first learned about him through the book ‘’ The Gracie Way ‘’ which I discovered in high school. I was always since I was young searching for some source of secret knowledge rather it be the Ninja Turtles and Master Splinter or Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid. I was always fascinated with the idea of the Master or Guru. Something that I continue now to search for and it can be quite a fascinating process of discovery.

The thing that really stuck with me when reading about Carlos, especially his later years is the dedication he put into meditation and contemplation. Jiu Jitsu as a martial art had brought me face first with many fears and anxieties that one only discovers over the time of learning the art. You learn to push yourself past your set limits and be comfortable in uncomfortable positions. As the years went on the training on the mat began to translate into my everyday life. It brought me a sense of confidence that I had struggled with my whole life and do a degree still struggle with everyday. It allowed me to be able to much more clear headed under pressure. I could be working on the line at the restaurant job I had and look around and see everyone stressed but I was still able to keep a cool head and flow with it.

The flow, it sounds like some mystical woo woo made up term but it’s indeed real. It has become more popular now as scientists have began to study the brain and understand the deeper meanings of these states. Once you unlock that flow in Jiu Jitsu it morphs and and starts to seep into your everyday reality.

Everyday we wake up and step foot into the reality of whatever it is you call your everyday reality, it could be retail work or a bus driver or an engineer. We all face the same anxieties and struggles, we all are human and have the same make up. We all have certain attributes and I think we often can forgot than in our own insecurities and anxieties. If we all lived by these commandments and others like the golden rule we would all operate in society in a much better and loving way.

I know it might seem like something that appears on the outside to be a violent at times a martial art thats history dates back to the samurai, and at times it can be violent and harsh. That is the key though I believe, just like life Jiu Jitsu is tough and as you practice and began to progress you really find that inner peace. Its certainly not something that happens over night or over weeks but takes years of dedication to achieve. I’m still not 100 percent strong enough with my state of my mind but I’m actively working on it. I’m constantly trying to improve my mental, physical and emotional state. One percent better everyday is better than making negative progress.

Even though someday you will have mishaps in your progression and have to take a step back to look at things in a new perspective. Clean the slate, clear the ego, tap out to a training partner. You must seek to put yourself out into the world, to express yourself in the truest and most honest form. We are here for some type of purpose, I hope you can see your purpose and began to develop a stronger self. Through the struggle on the mat will eventually lead to the flow, the flow will lead to a stronger mind and a more peaceful nature. I could be wrong, but it’s just my opinion. Why spend this precious time we’ve been given not to be a better human. One goal to be so strong that nothing can disturb the peace of your mind!
